It%26#039;s kind of hard to explain... but when you get into the %26quot;cardio%26quot; zone, your body begins to use it%26#039;s faster stores of energy - the glycogen, which is stored carbohydrates, in your liver. It is quickly available and quickly depleted.
When you work out at a lower heart rate, your body doesn%26#039;t need the energy quite as quickly, so it metabolizes fat for energy instead. Fat is much higher in supply, but takes longer to metabolize it.
The cardio zone is good for your heart, it increases your VO2 Max (the volume of oxygen in your blood) which allows the same amount of oxygen reach your muscles with fewer heart beats. So this slows your heart rate, and then you will be able to work out harder to achieve the same heart rate.
