Why are babys heart rate the fastest?

1. Myocardium (heart muscle) is less compliant and stroke volume is limited (1.5 cc/kg/beat/minute versus 75-90 cc/beat in an adult). THUS, Heart rate rather than stroke volume increases to maintain cardiac output.

2. Infants have higher cardiac output than adults (200 cc/ kg/minute versus 100 cc/kg/minute).Increases oxygen needs. Leaves little cardiac reserve.
