it is most likely due to years of inactivity. Of course, cardiovascular problems should be ruled out before initiating a work out routine, especially if someone is older, over weight, or has never worked out before.

Please be more specific with demographics of your friend. Height, weight, age, overall health before work out, etc

she needs to start off more slowly with gradual increase every time her heart rate goes up she should slow down and reduce the intensity level

I agree with drpsholder, more info is needed, but if she is overweight and un fit she should go to the doctor first for a check up, Basic principle start slow and light, get a heart rate monitor such as those made by pulsar. Aim for the weight loss heart rate for her age and work on getting the weight down first this is often very much lower than cardio vascular range. Also if you are not a sports scientist or a doctor its not for you to start her on this course leave it to the professionals,

You need to know her heart rate from rest max heart rate is approx age from 220 that gives you max heart rate get a heart rate monitor run until the heart goes to say 180 then rest let it come back down to say 120-130 then repeat gradually the distance will get longer with fitness muscle soreness is usually due to lactic acid so warm down after a run do a few stretching exercises before and after running I think she has tried to do to much too soon
